In 1842, Prattsville residents decided to build an “academy,” a place of higher learning where the sciences and the classics would be taught. Colonel Zadock Pratt donated $2,000 of the $4,000 to construct the brick building, which was located across the road from Grace Episcopal Church, since torn down and now the site of the Prattsville Diner. Local residents raised the additional $2,000 to construct the building, which lasted as a school into the early part of the 20th century. Many of you will recognize this building today as the Prattsville Town Hall. The beautiful columns and second floor of the building were destroyed by fire.
If you have any memories of this school, please share them.
